Why Is Linda Evangelista Sueing After 'Fat Freezing@ with Coolsculpting

Updated: May 12, 2022

I read the articles in the news this week about Linda Evangelista's claims against ZELTIQ brand 'Coolsculpting' in 2013. (a Fat Freezing manufacturer and chain).

Her complaint alleged that ZELTIQ was aware that their product 'Coolsculpting' could cause PAH back in 2013 but the information was "never reported in any of its advertising and/or marketing campaigns directed to consumers." Now the 90's model is suing them due to having slimming treatments that may have been the cause of Paradoxical Hyperplasia.

The condition of Paradoxical Adipose Hyperplasia (PAH) has a rate incidence of 0.0051% out of the 1.5million 'CoolSculpting' procedures do worldwide.

PAH is an extremely rare side effect of the branded 'CoolScupting' Fat Freezing. It can cause thickening of the fat cells treated and you can see it after several month because it gets bigger in exactly the shape of the 'cup' that was used during the freezing treatment. (See the photo).

It's really awful that this happened.

A good therapist will explain contra indications and possible side effects before the treatment/s are carried out. At We Love Beauty we ask our clients to:

  • Start with a free consultation

  • Listen to a full explanation of the treatment and how the machine works when attending the salon

  • Read and sign that they have acknowledged and understood the treatment fully (including side effects) and ask questions before the treatment begins

  • Agree to photographs before and after the treatment

  • Give advice on continuing maintenance of the results of the treatment

  • Bring the client back in for a review and further photos within 4 weeks

  • Advise on lifestyle changes including diet, exercise and any other treatments.

Clients are also asked to wait between treatments to see how their body reacts to the treatment.

One of the conversations I have with my clients is that if they were to binge or not exercise at all, there is a risk that their body will create more fat cells to store excess fat in. Our fat cells store energy and insulate our bodies. Research now shows that our fat cells can move around body compartments to help heal wounds. Fat cells are always trying to store fats as well as vitamins, hormones, pollutants and toxins. Our adipose tissue soaks it all and keeps it until we need it.

Luckily, fat freezing (cryolipolysis) is much more sophisticated now and most therapists are well versed in anatomy and physiology.

When you decide on fat freezing ensure it's a viable treatment for you i.e. it's not suitable for obesity but great to get rid of those stubborn areas that you cannot move through diet and exercise. It's a wonderful treatment for those in menopause too.

Ideally, combine fat freezing with hifu to ensure that the skin retracts as the fat cells die and leave the body.
