When I was a teenager we used vaseline on our lips, eyelashes and brows in the hope they looked healthier and added to our natural beauty.
My mother wouldn't let us use more than pears soap on our skin and told us repeatedly that the best way to a better skin was eating all your vegetables and drinking loads of water and stay out of the sun. Three things I didn't enjoy.
I didn't stay out of the sun.
To this day I use Vaseline on my lips and brows.
Now everyone is fascinated by skincare hacks on TikTok and other social media and believe it or not it is all about Vaseline.
'Slugging' is when you cover your skin with petroleum jelly and leave it on overnight. Yes, this is happening!
This strange and old treatment is the fourth most searched beauty trend on TikTok. It caught my eye as my niece asked what she could use on her dry skin at the tender age of 14. I said basics like Dove soap and Vaseline and she laughed so, I sent her the link from TikTok and she's on it now.
The interesting part is that TikTok is hailing 'slugging' as the best for a glowing skin.
Now we all know occlusive products are oils and waxes that lay down a layer over the skin to protect it and help it heal. Did you know that it also prevents loss of moisture so prevents dryness of the skin. When we seal our skin you can prevent and reduce water loss.

Basically, it locks the moisture in and this makes the skin more hydrated than usually, and plumped.
The science tells us that slugging lays down a layer that stops oxygen getting on the skin, which is actually the main cause of dehydration.
You're going to love the next part.
Slugging also makes your skin products more effective. The layer of occlusive product helps serums and other skin care products penetrate more because they won't evaporate.
In short, let's go back to Vaseline if we struggle with dry or sensitive skin. Avoid slugging if you are acne prone or oily skin. Also, it's not great for under the eyes!
For those of you who cannot 'slug', try a heavier layer of moisturiser for your skin type and leave it on overnight. We prefer Clinisoothe+ as it is a spray made up mostly with essential oils that lay down a protective barrier on the skin against pollution, sun and chemicals.
